A grid technology, which means a net or a grate in English, shall expand possibilities of existing supercomputers at the expense of unification and allocation of computation resources, situated in different organizations, countries and even on different continents. After obtainment of a private key and a certificate for the entrance into a grid-infrastructure, a user enters an extra-difficult task into his personal computer. He may not even be aware of the fact, in which computation centers it is being solved, where the obtained data are stored. It shall not cause anxiety, because the system is designed in such a way that information security is guaranteed.

Such a technology is very profitable, as it allows enterprises and organizations saving their pockets for the purchase of powerful computers, software systems of the world level, equipment of big computation centers. A part of computation resources, provided by each project participant, becomes a contribution into this virtual “telecommunication collective.” Besides, the grid-technology essentially cuts the time for solution of tasks, what is very important, for example, while analyzing financial and insurance risks (a decision on granting a credit to the bank’s client can be accepted by the expert system in several minutes, and this essentially advances the bank’s competitive ability). Possibilities of researchers while modelling the processes in nanotechnology, nuclear physics, pharmaceutics, biology, medicine, genetics, microelectronics, mechanic engineering, hydrometeorology, cryptologic protection expand significantly. Command and control of a computer park of geographically distributed subdivisions of one enterprise from a single center is being simplified, additional possibilities occur.

Specialists think that the grid-technology will assist to the formation of a single scientific, technical, information, and computation space, to the entrance to foreign markets with science-intensive products and services, based on the usage of the results, obtained by the “SKIF-GRID” program.

Belarusian scientists have carried out modernization of SKIF K-1000 supercomputer system and created a basic configuration of SKIF К-1000М supercomputer system for full usage of the latest advances of IT-technologies. The corresponding software was worked out. Owing to this fact, we managed to raise the productivity of the computing facilities, increase their reliability and reduce electric energy consumption. It is planned that a new engine, created at Minsk Motor Plant, and new powerful “Volat,” constructed at Minsk Wheel Tractor Plant, will become the first fruit of the future technology.

A grid-segment of the Joint Institute of the Problems of Informatics of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus has already been practically launched on the basis of resources of the Republican supercomputer center of collective usage. A grid-network segment for solution of applied tasks on material sciences and explosive material processing is being formed in Belarusian National Technical University. Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radioelectronics and “Belmikrosistema” enterprise will undertake a task of digital devices’ design. The Institute of Energetic and Nuclear Research “Sosny” of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus will provide realization of the program in the sphere of high-energy physics.

Realization of these plans will allow Belarus creating a federation of supercomputer centers with Russia within the frames of the “SKIF-GRID” program, uniting efforts in this sphere with the Ukraine and Moldova, and integrating into the European grid-infrastructure.
