Alexander Lukashenko’s tour of Protos JSC allowed him to view the modern equipment and technological processes of making metal structures. He chatted with workers and answered various questions, including those relating to future prospects and sales markets. Mr. Lukashenko supports scientific innovation connected with production and encouraged those working at the plant to put forward any ideas they have for improvement, confirming that Belarus supports individual entrepreneurs.
He noted that funds and loans are available to new entrepreneurs and to enterprises branching into new fields and stressed that he has never opposed private property ownership, although he believes that those firms essential to state security must stay under central control. Any company sale is conducted carefully, with buyers having to prove that they can operate successfully, as well as pay an appropriate price. Mr. Lukashenko cited agriculture, where almost a third of farms are now privately owned. He emphasised that the trend will continue.
Work continues
He underlined the need for honesty and justice and urged more enterprises to engage in production, instead of speculation. He sees no reason to cancel the holiday on November 7th, but does not view it as being of political significance, noting only that people are used to celebrating on this date. He explained, “I am against revolution, as we all are, but, at that time, people were struggling for a better life.” The Head of State asserts that he has no desire to change history or rename dates, adding, “This holiday has a different agenda in our country, since it coincides with the end of the production and fiscal year for enterprises.”
The President has suggested that ‘community projects’ be launched on this date, such as Mogilev’s reconstructed bridge over the River Dnieper, which is vital to social infrastructure and the road system. He is also adamant that everyone should be working hard, playing their part to pay taxes, which fund education and public health services. He is resentful of those who access such services without contribution and is convinced that more needs to be done to ensure that all make their employment contribution.
