Alexander Lukashenko meets President of International Weightlifting Federation, Tamás Aján

The Head of the IWF believes that Belarus has a good chance of hosting future junior and youth Weightlifting World Championships, and has asked Belarus to tender for the hosting of the adult World Weightlifting Championship in 2019. The latter will be a qualifying tournament for the Summer Games of 2020, with 4-5 countries expected to apply for hosting.

Belarus has accepted the IWF proposal with gratitude, having good traditions in weightlifting and much successful experience. These include Olympic, world and continental champions. Alexander Lukashenko notes that Belarus is eager to promote a sporting lifestyle, including through weightlifting, and this approach is already yielding fruit.

“We have enough facilities for youngsters to take part in all types of Olympic sport,” notes the President, adding that Belarus is ready to organise competitions at a worthy level. He stresses, “We have everything necessary, including a good network of hotels and world-level venues for hosting weightlifting competitions.”

His meeting also tackled Belarus’ prospective hosting of a large anti-doping conference in 2017. Mr. Lukashenko highlights that Belarus is eager to support all international anti-doping initiatives.
