Belarus’ national track-and-field team claims three medals at European Athletics Championship

Tatiana Khaladovich’s golden attempt

Javelin thrower Tatiana Khaladovich, 25, earned gold for our team, thanks to her throw of 66.34m at her second attempt, setting a new record for Belarus. In the qualification round, Tatiana, who had already thrown 65.1m before Amsterdam, slightly disappointed fans by qualifying for the finals in eighth position. She began then with a throw of 61.82m, before her 66.34m effort. Her rivals failed to come close.

One of the leaders of the Belarusian national squad, 2015 World Championship bronze holder in the 100m hurdles, Alina Talay, earned silver, ahead of British Tiffany Porter, who was viewed as her major rival. German Cindy Roleder accelerated significantly over the last few metres and won gold by setting the best European result of the season.

Ivan Tikhon in hammer throwing sector

Ivan Tikhon, who recently returned to the national team, did well in hammer throwing. On the final day of the competition, he clinched silver. Before his final attempt, the famous athlete occupied third place; however, with his final throw, of 78.84m, he secured second place behind Poland’s Pawel Fajdek (80.46m). Polish Wojciech Nowicki (77.53m) came third.

The European Athletics Championship was a serious test for our track-and-field national team on the eve of the Olympics. They now return to Minsk to continue training for the Rio Games.
