Geneva hosts consultations on Belarus’ accession to WTO


Held in the Headquarters of the World Trade Organisation, the consultations involved Belarusian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Guryanov, the Chairman of the WTO’s Working Party on the Accession of Belarus — Mehmet Haluk Ilicak, and top officials from the WTO Secretariat (who handle the accession of new members to the organisation).

Consultations focused on the current situation regarding Belarus’ accession to the WTO, including taking into account the prospects of Eurasian integration. Partners from the WTO mentioned the importance of documents recently submitted by Belarus and drew attention to the need for certain conditions to be met, to ensure negotiations are intensified. It was agreed that further steps are essential to secure progress and Belarus confirmed its serious interest and readiness to step up efforts to accelerate its WTO accession.
