Minsk club defeats Italian Florentina in Florence, in final match of Europe League group stage

The Florence match had no tournament value for either team, the hosts having long since gained a place in the final 32 in the League of Europe, while the Minsk squad was unable to rise from last place in Group K, regardless of the outcome. Nevertheless, Vladimir Zhuravel’s players didn’t go out with a whimper, claiming an unexpected victory over the Group leader.

Simone Minelli (L) fights for the ball with Nemanja Nikolic

Dinamo Minsk scored the first goal not long before halftime, thanks to Igor Stasevich’s accurate pass Sergey Kontsevoy. Early in the second half, Belarus scored again, with Nemanja Nikolic sending a shot into Fiorentina’s net. The Italians fought back, attacking Alexander Gutor’s goal, leading to Marco Minelli managing a goal. However, Minsk kept up their defence and finished the match victorious.

The Belarusian footballers have managed what seemed impossible: their first victory in the Europa League and the first Eurocup victory over the Italians. No Belarusian club has ever scored more than one goal against the Italians.
In another match in Group K, the outsider of the French championship, Guingamp, defeated Greek PAOK 1:2 in an away match, taking second place in the group, and leaving PAOK third. Sadly, Minsk Dinamo closes the standings.
