Belarusian State University is in 673rd position in the updated version of Webometrics Ranking of World Universities

bsu.pngThe list’s compliers have analysed 22 thousand institutes of higher education out of around 30 thousand institutes that exist in the world — BSU appeared in 673rd position.

The top position was won by the Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University.

One Spanish research laboratory, Laboratorio de Internet, has been making the cut for eleven years. The data-base is updated twice a year: in January and July. The institutes of higher education, as a rule, are ranged on four parameters which characterise the level of scientific publications and presence of universities on the Internet: ‘influence’, ‘presence’, ‘openness’ and ‘quality’.

During the last three years, according to the data of Webometrics, BSU stably entered into the three percent of the best universities of the world. Among the CIS countries, BSU enters into the top five of the best institutes of higher education, conceding only to the Lomonosov Moscow State University, Novosibirsk State University, the St. Petersburg State University and National Research Nuclear University MEPhI.

Among Belarusian institutes of higher education, BSU is in the lead. On the second place is the Belarusian National Technical University, which is in 1,973th place in the rating. The Yanka Kupala State University of Grodno closes Belarus’ top-three and occupies 2,154rd position.

The electronic library of the BSU boasts successes on the world arena. “According to the rating, it is first among the libraries of the CIS countries. The library was included into 100 best libraries among the given structures of the European universities (66th place) and took 114th place among world libraries,” workers at the BSU explained.

It is necessary to note that as of July 2014, the rating Webometrics Ranking of World Universities covered more than 1.5 thousand repositories of institutes of higher education and research centres from the whole world. The purpose of such a world competition of sources of information and interpretation of data is the support of open access to scientific publications and other educational material in electronic form. By means of this system of ranging, its developers intend to additionally motivate researchers to publish results of their scientific activity on the Internet, making them accessible, irrespective of the country of residence. One of the basic ideas of Webometrics rating is the stimulation of information exchange between scientists of the world and the publication of results of institutes’ research on their sites. It is especially important in modern conditions, when the exchange of scientific information between regions is of paramount importance.
