Recently, one of Belarus’ major publishing houses, Narodnaya Asveta, celebrated its 65th anniversary, having produced millions of copies. Printing the majority of school textbooks, there’s no doubt that every Belarusian has benefitted from its distribution.
Information Minister Lilia Ananich tells us that Belarusian publishing houses are preparing a national system of textbooks, with Narodnaya Asveta playing a key role. Since independence, it has witnessed the birth of our national education system, such that every family owns copies. Ms. Ananich is convinced that printed editions remain important in the computer age.
Over the past five years, 900 textbooks have been published, with a 6.5m circulation. In addition, there have been many works of children’s literature released, and over 50 editions annually in Braille: textbooks, fiction and rare editions.
