Triple 2014 Olympic biathlon champion Darya Domracheva and Russian Anton Shipulin win mixed relay as part of traditional annual Race of Champions, hosted by Moscow on artificial snow, at Olympiysky Sport Complex

The race’s spectacular 10.8km mixed relay features nine laps (1.2km each) and eight shooting ranges (half prone and half standing). At each, there are five targets to hit (a miss bringing a 30m penalty lap), and an additional bonus target. Each female biathlete chooses her own partner, taking four of the alternating laps and giving five to her teammate.

Belarusian-Russian duo Darya Domracheva and Anton Shipulin enjoyed the fewest misses: just one. Taking gold, they were followed by French Marie Dorin-Habert and Martin Fourcade, with bronze claimed by Gabriela Soukalova (the Czech Republic) and Simon Schempp (Germany).

The mixed relay is the second for Domracheva in the Race of Champions. She was also third in the women’s 6km mass start. Before the beginning of the event, the female biathletes conducted a marksmanship contest to decide on their starting positions in the forthcoming race, with Domracheva coming ninth. Her high speed skiing took her impressively into the lead until two misses sadly knocked her back into third.

The world’s leading biathletes have now finished their winter season, with the Big Crystal Globes awarded to Martin Fourcade (France) and Kaisa Mдkдrдinen (Finland). Legendary Norwegian Ole Einar Bjшrndalen, 40, didn’t take part in the Race of Champions, having a full schedule.
