Athletics traditions attract attention

Belarus is ready to welcome top level athletics competitions, notes Alexander Lukashenko, on meeting the President of the European Athletics Association, Hansjorg Wirz

Mr. Lukashenko stressed that Belarus is ready to create the necessary conditions to host international athletics competitions of the highest level. “We’re capable, as the recent Ice Hockey World Championship has proven. It was the best World Championship on record. Therefore, you can expect that our hosting of the athletics forum would also be the world’s best,” the President asserted.

Mr. Lukashenko thanked Mr. Wirz for the attention paid to Belarus’ development of its track-and-field athletics, noting that this is ‘a major incentive’ to continue its work in track-and-field sports. “I thank you for supporting our federation, for your assistance with coach training and for sharing your methods,” noted the Head of State.

According to the President, good athletics traditions exist in Belarus; moreover, he promises that athletics schools will be restored, and ‘you’ll soon hear many good things about Belarusian athletes’.

Mr. Wirz remarked that, over the course of the few days he had spent in Belarus, he had been able to witness Belarus’ achievements in developing sports infrastructure. “I agree with your statement that Belarus is ready to welcome world level competitions. We deem it our duty to accept your proposal and to use Belarus to stage such events,” he said.
