Century old holiday celebrated

applefeast.pngAccording to legend, the holiday recalls Jesus climbing the mount of Favour with three disciples, where Christ’s Transfiguration took place. The holiday is also called Apple Feast Saviour Day.

New harvests are consecrated on this day; in Belarus, apples are central, symbolising youth and the eternal energy of life. As is traditional, the soil should not be disturbed on this day, so all land-related labour is prohibited.

Polotsk’s Apple Feast Saviour Day was held near the Church of the Patronage of the Mother of God, inviting everyone to sample this year’s apples and take part in culinary master classes in cooking apple desserts.

The city also hosted Appleart, with apples used within artistic masterpieces, to decorate the church; each was named and the author asked to explain their inspiration. Parents and children took part in photo sessions, as part of a project entitled The Apple Doesn’t Fall Far from the Tree, while farmers competed in their own contests to find the largest apple, the most tasty, and the greatest number of apple varieties.

The Garden Literacy project offered advice to all those interested in fruit tree growing and experts shared their opinions.
