International migration issues discussed at Second Committee of UN General Assembly 69th Session, involving Belarus

The Belarusian delegation took part in debates on international migration, agriculture and food security, as well as the UN’s operational activities for development. The Head of Global Policy and Humanitarian Co-operation, at the Belarusian Foreign Ministry, Vadim Pisarevich, praised UN approaches to addressing international migration issues, and welcomed the theme finding reflection in the post-2015 development agenda. He stressed the importance of the issue for Belarus and informed delegates about the country’s efforts via demographic security programmes and measures to attract highly qualified experts.

During the debate on agricultural development and food security, Belarus’ representative expressed concern and called on the international community to use an integrated and co-ordinated approach.

Belarus’ delegation noted the role of the UN in providing official financial assistance for the development of member countries, including those of middle-income. In this respect, the Belarusian delegation proposed a plan of action for co-operation with middle-income countries, expressing confidence that their progress and successful development would then positively influence the development of the least developed countries.
